From September 2020 URANPRES s.r.o. in Poland is involved in the construction of Tunnels TD1 and TD2 on the S1 expressway “Bypass of Wegierska Gorka”, Poland
To complete the S1 expressway (Bielsko Biała – Zywiec – Zwardoń), passing through the Polish Silesia region, the last section, Przybędza – Milówka, with a bypass of Węgierska Górka, remains to be built. This RC S1 bypass (135 km) is important not only because it relieves the village of transit traffic, but above all because it is located in the corridor of the VI trans-European transport network, linking the Baltic Sea and the countries of southern Europe. It is also an important link within the TEN-T network No.25, forming a road axis on the “Gdańsk – Brno/Bratislava – Vienna” line. The completion of this section will link the expressway to the Slovak D3 motorway in Skalit. The 8.53 km long section will include two road tunnels, three bridges and five flyovers, one of which will reach a length of 940 m.
The most complex part of this project is undoubtedly the construction of the two twin-tunnels incorporated into this route. We started the project with the punching of the TD2 tunnel on 12 November 2020. Work on the TD1 tunnel tube starts in January 2021. Basic information about the construction – tunnel part:
Investor: GDDKiA – General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways
Contractor: Consortium of Mirbud S.A., Kobylarnia S.A. and Interbudmontaź
Designer: MOSTY Katowice Sp. z o.o.
Subcontractor – tunnels TD1 and TD2: Uranpres spol. s r.o.
The tunelling Method: NATM
- Primary lining made of shotcrete anchored into the solid (curry nets, bolts). Stamping with horizontal articulation of the face (calotte, step and bottom).
- Intermediate insulation.
- Secondary lining with reinforced concrete.
Scope of work of Uranpres: stamping and primary lining, secondary lining of the tunnel
Morphology: the valley of the Sola River dominates the area that separates the surrounding mountain ranges. A dense network of valleys and ravines with mountain streams.
Geological structure: flysch Carpathians, Beskydy Mountains. Flysch formations of the Tertiary, from the Paleocene through the Eocene, Oligocene to the Cretaceous. Flysch formations and Quaternary slope sediments
Tunnel design speed: 80 km/h
Tunnel TD-1 in the slope of the Barania Góra massif
- Lenght: TD-1,1 = 834,0 m; TD-1,2 = 807,08 m
- Usable width of a typical section: 10,2 m
- Road width: 8,2 m (2 x 3,5 + 0,7 m +0,5 m)
- Height of the gauge: max 7 m
- Class of road (according to Polish regulations): „S“
Tunnel TD-2 in the slope of the Bialżyński Groń massif
- Lenght: TD-2,1 = 984,0 m, TD-2,2 = 974,96 m
- Usable width of a typical section: 10,2 m
- Road width: 8,2 m (2 x 3,5 + 0,7 m+ 0,5m)
- Height of the gauge: max 7 m

Drilling works on the primary lining was officially completed at the end of 2023.
Secondary tunnel lining TD1 and TD2.
Number of blocks of secondary lining in each pipe:
TD1.1 – 68 segments
TD1.2 – 69 segments
TD2.1 – 82 segments
TD2.2 – 83 segments
In each of the tunnels there are 3 transverse connecting corridors.
The secondary lining of the tunnel is reinforced with time-consuming bonded reinforcement without the use of reinforcement nets. The reinforcement works are carried out using 2 reinforcement wagons with a total length of 12m/1 wagon to speed up the works, as the reinforcement proved to be the most time-consuming operation.
2 formwork wagons supplied by Uranpres, one by Ostu stettin and the other by Euroform, are used simultaneously for the concreting. For the portal blocks, a steel counterweight designed by Uranpres was used.
The composition of the upper vault of the secondary lining consists of:
- Geotextile PES 1000g/m2
- Waterproofing thickness 2,0mm ( Promatess)
- Reinforced concrete vault of the secondary lining hr.350mm made of concrete C40/50 XA1
Concreting of the upper vaults commenced on March 22, 2023, with the concreting of the first upper vault and the completion of the upper vaults scheduled for the end of November 2024.
The anticipated completion date for the work on the secondary lining is November 2024.
